·  My docking sled's top edge is not 'bent'.
(Entry last updated on February 18th, 2002)

The front edge of the car docking sled should have a "fold" on all four edges. The lip should be turned outward in all four directions.

A certain number of Rio Car players were shipped with docking sleds where one of the folds was 'missed' during manufacturing (pictured, photo courtesy of Ben Withers). The top edge of the sled, instead of having a turned lip, has a straight edge.

Whether or not this is a problem is going to depend on your installation and how all the parts fit together. I installed a player in my friend Tod's car, and his sled had this defect. It does not seem to have affected it adversely, the player still seems to fit snugly and it seems to make a proper set of connections.

If your sled has this defect, and you do notice problems (such as intermittent connections which work when you press on the player), you can solve it one of two ways:

  • If you have access to the proper equipment, you can bend it yourself. And I don't mean just taking a pair of pliers to it, that would probably make it look ugly. I mean proper sheet-metal folding equipment, like the kind you might find in a machine shop. Heck, maybe you could bring it to your local machine shop and they'll just do it for you really quick.

  • You can contact support and they can fix you up.

However, if it's not giving you any trouble, there is probably no need to worry about it so you should just leave it as-is.
