·  Why doesn't my power antenna go up and down at the right time?
(Entry last updated on July 2nd, 2002)

When using the Rio Car tuner module, there are a few different possible issues with raising and lowering the power antenna.

If the antenna is properly wired, it should raise when you switch to the radio, and lower when you switch back to playing MP3s. If you have activated the RDS Traffic Announce (TA) feature, it will raise whenever the player is turned on, so that TA broadcasts can interrupt MP3 playback.

Possible problems are:

1. Software Bugs:

Certain versions of the player firmware wouldn't always properly activate/deactivate the power antenna control wire on the tuner module's extension cable. Make sure you're running the latest player firmware.

2. Correct Wiring:

There is a blue wire coming directly from the docking sled itself. This is the Amp Remote wire, and it's meant to activate the amplifiers in your car. It will turn on whenever the player is on. If you have connected your power antenna to the Amp Remote wire, it will work, but your antenna will be raised even when you're just listening to MP3s. So you can't, for example, listen to MP3s while you're driving through an automatic car wash.

The extension cable for the tuner module has a separate blue wire to activate the power antenna. This is the one that will only be activated when you're listening to the radio, and this is the one that should be connected to your power antenna. Note that it will also be activated whenever Traffic Announce is turned on.

3. Current Draw Problem:

Some users have experienced a problem where their antenna does not raise and lower correctly as described above. For instance, it raises when they switch to the radio, but it does not lower when they switch back to MP3 mode. Or perhaps it raises when the player is switched on for the first time, even if it's wired properly and Traffic Announce is not activated.

Hugo discovered that some power antenna relays have a current draw problem and the voltage on the power antenna wire doesn't fall enough to make the antenna go down. If this is happening to you, try attaching a 1k resistor between the power antenna wire and ground and see if it solves the problem:
