·  My config.ini file went all goofy on me, and I can't edit my favorite visuals any more!
(Entry last updated on April 1st, 2003)

If, after having used software 2.0 beta 11, you are having trouble editing the config.ini file, if you are having trouble editing favorite visuals, or if additional entries seem to be getting added to your favorites list, you might be running into a known bug. If you synched more than once during the same session of Emplode 2.0 beta 11, the Favorite Visuals section of the config.ini would double in size. A few extra hits of the synch button could quickly make your config.ini too large for the player to handle.

To solve the problem, do the following: Upgrade both your player firmware and Emplode to the most recent software versions for each. Then delete all of the favorites via the Emplode "Favorite Visuals" menu, then synch. After that, you should be able to use the "Favorite Visuals" feature without having any more problems.

If your config.ini file seems to have become corrupted (for instance, it contains garbage characters), then you will need to delete it and start over again. Do this as follows:

  1. Copy any vital information from the corrupted version of config.ini into a text document on your local hard disk. (Information on opening the confing.ini file is here.)

  2. Connect to the player's shell prompt. (Information here.)

  3. Use the following shell commands to delete the file from the player:
(rwm may take a couple minutes to respond)
    cd /empeg/var
    rm config.ini
  4. Reboot the player.

  5. Use the "Configure Player" screen in Emplode to enter the basic information about your player, and then synch once.

  6. Now you should be able to edit config.ini again through Emplode. Copy the desired information from the text document you created in step 1. Note: Copy only the information that can't be re-entered from other Emplode configuration screens. For instance, do not copy the Favorite Visuals lists back in by hand. Instead, use the appropriate configuration options in Emplode to do that work.

If you can reliably reproduce a situation which causes config.ini garbage or corruption, please let us know the exact steps it takes to cause the problem. We'd really like to know.

One final note: If you prefer to edit the config.ini by copying it to your PC, editing it, and copying it back to the player, remember that Linux text files are different than Windows text files. So don't use Windows Notepad to edit the file or you will corrupt it. Windows files contain a carriage return and a linefeed at the end of each line (hex 0D 0A), and Linux files contain only a linefeed (hex 0A). Opening the config.ini in most Windows text editors will add the CR/LF pairs when you open the file, which will ruin it.

The only way to use Windows to edit a Linux text file is with a more advanced utility such as UltraEdit. After making your text edits, place the editor into Hex mode and use search-and-replace to globally replace 0D 0A with just 0A, then save the file without switching back to text mode. Another option is to perform your edits with a Unix-aware editor program such as EditPad Classic.
