Both the front panel and the remote can be used in the car or at home. You can do almost anything you need to do with the front panel, so the remote is not required.

There are some things that are easier to do on the remote because you can do it with a single button-press instead of looking at the player's screen to navigate sub-menus. Also, there are a few things you can only do with the remote, such as alphanumeric searches. But most of what you need to do can be done with the front panel.

By the way, there are two remote controls available for the Rio Car. The original empeg Car products shipped with a Kenwood KCA-R6A remote control, and the Rio Car ships with a custom-made Rio remote control. The Rio remote control has its own custom infrared control code set, and its button layout is slightly different Both models of remote control will work with all of the empeg Car and Rio Car players, provided the player is running a recent version of the player firmware.
