If your player is behaving like it's been infested with a poltergeist, including:

- Rapid switching between Player and Aux as if someone is stabbing the 'Source' button every 2 seconds.

- Continuous Fast Forwarding through tracks as if the right button is being held down.

- Player shutting itself down as though the top button were held down.

- In all cases, a valid button press, knob twiddle or IR code breaks the cycle and restores proper behavior.

First check to make sure that you're not sitting on the remote, and/or check to make sure that you don't have a devious friend with a Kenwood remote. Then check to make sure that you haven't tightened the plastic fascia on too tight causing buttons to stick down. Also check to make sure that these things still happen when the player is disconnected from the serial and ethernet plugs, in case it's receiving remote serial or network commands.

If you have a GPS receiver connected to the player's serial port, and this happens after running a piece of GPS software, and you're running certain versions of Hijack, you might need to go into the Hijack menu and select "Serial Port Assignment, Apps Use Serial Port".

If your player is turning off all by itself, check to make sure that you have not enabled the Hijack screen blanker feature. Some users have reported the player shutting down rather than just blanking the screen.

If those are all OK, then there might be something wrong with the player's infrared transceiver. Check this by using the Hijack web interface to navigate to the location "http://(my empeg's IP address)/proc/empeg_ir". Look for the "Missed Interrupts" value. A player that's having this problem will get thousands of missed IR interrupts as it sits there idle. A few missed interrupts are normal, especially as the player boots up. But numbers that pile up into the thousands over time (check proc/empeg_ir more than once over a period of hours) indicate a problem.

It's been reported that it can be fixed by touching up loose solder joints on the IR assembly. More details here.

WARNING:
Do not attempt to do any soldering on the player unless you have experience with soldering delicate surface-mount devices. There is a real possibility that you could permanently ruin the unit if you are clumsy, if you use too much heat, or any number of other mistakes. You're better off contacting support and having them do it for you.

If you're not getting the missed interrupts problem, another possible cause of random player behavior is stray signals from the Sony stalk interface on the tuner module. This can only happen if you've got a Mark 2 player with the tuner module installed.

The tuner includes an interface for a Sony wired remote control, which uses resistance values to send signals to the player. The tuner is somehow picking up random resistance levels on its stalk input and is translating those into player commands. To disable this, install Hijack and put the following in your config.ini file:

[hijack]
stalk_enabled=0;

If this makes the random behavior stop, then the source of the problem was the tuner module's stalk input.

It's also been reported that phantom inputs can come from the tuner in another way that's not related to the stalk input. One user has reported that he needed to disconnect the tuner completely to make the phantom events stop. The source of that particular problem is still being investigated as of this writing.
